Small Trees Bring Joy Amid Shrubs In Family Back Garden

It has to be said that winter is not the best season for looking over a garden.  it is usually very damp and in the deepest winter, it will be frozen and very messy once that ice thaws.  I take the opportunity to gaze lovingly out at my small but tidily kept rear garden.  I have it mostly laid to lawn with a deep sweeping border across the back that contains a variety of my favourite shrubs plus some delicate items that bob around in the spring.  I also have two spectacular little trees.  One is a maple that starts off with very bight green leaves that start to go yellow in dry weather, before eventually turning orange and then absolutely incredible bright red.  I know that it can be seen from quite a distance away, through the trees along the bridle path down the side of my neighbour’s garden.  I also have a dear little crab apple in the middle of a small oval shaped bed.  It flowers for a month in spring then just sits there with dark red leaves for the rest of the summer until it sheds in autumn.  When developers tell us that no one wants gardens these days – I challenge them on this.  No one who has seen my trees fails to express delight and signs that they too would have one of each  . . if only they could!  I have garden help, a chap who has obliged this function with wonderful humour and patience for thirteen years now.  Worth every penny.
