Making The Changes Really Matter

When you are renovating or just smartening up your home, it can be difficult at times to focus on the really critical jobs first. The huge out of town furniture and home product stores make it so very easy to swap things like the 3 piece suite or the sideboard and of course the massive scandinavian outlets also have everything any family could be wishing for at the tap of a key or two on the phone. However, there is a great deal more to making a tidy, reasonably cheaplt furnished home actually become that fantastic, much dreamed of mini paradise.

Perhaps you have been able to hire the services of a builder/carpenter/handyman to deal with the more complicated issues like fitting a few new kitchen cabinets or painting the walls and ceiling after they have seen to the general refiguring of the layout. I can think of one property that has been completely reorganised – the utility and dining rooms completely changed about; the kitchen refitted with gorgeous units in a streamlined paradise that now includes a massive American style double fridge/freezer; butler sink; beautifully clean and huge cooking hob with integrated steam and air fan that works like a cooker hood extractor fan. All these wonderful changes came about after careful discussions and planning discussions with a fantastic jobbing expert. The sort of pal you really need! He was in the middle of sorting out the new lounge layout when there was a problem with the aircon in the conservatory – he had a little look and needed to check the cabling from the next room. That involved taking up some lengths of parquet flooring. Boy they got a shock when he opened up this cavity – there was a major water leak underneath the sitting room floor. Huge areas of not just damp but actually wet timber underneath the fabulous 1923 parquet floor. This caused a massive headache at first. Panic loomed when they realised it would all have to be taken up and dried out before it could be put back, if at all. Well this caused too much worry for the owners. They decided to ask the expert chappie if he coud help them by changing the flooring as well. They all sat round checking patterns v design v paracticality. Their final choice was so remarkably like their own decision making. It is parquet flooring to a T and looks fantastic – beautifully laid on the correct foundation products and they look so old. The ’tiles’ ae all solid oak and it looks absolutely wonderful. What a match!

The housing development around my own home has been in place some 25 years and when the houses were first built, they were considered to be almost luxurious. They are mostly four bedroomed, all detached and for the first part of this century were considered most definitely executive quality. The developers were one of the…
