Car Mechanics & Pale Wool Carpets, Not A Good Mix

When our family moved into this attractive ‘executive four bed detached home’  to use estate agent parlance . . .  we had taken advantage of the splendid incentive scheme the developers were offering.  As if a sweetener was needed – my word, we couldn’t wait to part with every shekel we owned to get this house!  However, we did accept the offer to upgrade on the carpeting.  We chose to have most rooms carpeted in the same beautiful honey shade of wool and manmade mix.   We only had to pay for 30oz weight and were guaranteed to have 50oz supplied and fitted.  Now this was a fantastic deal for us as it was such a huge move from our previous 3 bed, definitely not executive home . . .  And so it came to pass that we had carpet almost everywhere, even unwidely as it turned out, in the hallway through to the family room.  Within a very short period of time from moving in, we had to make the decision to rip out the hall carpet and replace with something a great deal more practical.   So luscious light oak stained real oak flooring replaced the carpet through from the front door into the family room.  Perhaps if we’d chosen dark sump oil coloured carpet, it wouldn’t have been quite such a disaster.  The man of the house loved nothing more than tinkering with messy engines and under carriages whilst in the integral double garage that had a convenient doorway directly into the hallway. .  .  .

The housing development around my own home has been in place some 25 years and when the houses were first built, they were considered to be almost luxurious. They are mostly four bedroomed, all detached and for the first part of this century were considered most definitely executive quality. The developers were one of the…
