Thank Heavens for Christmas & Easter Roses, The Spring Staple

Just looking out over a spring time garden fills the heart with joy and enthusiasm for the smmer months to come. Fresh green shoots popping up in the borders are a sure sign that plenty more is about to be seen.  The winter flowering stalwarts are still very pleasing – the hellebores that cover much of the sweeping borders are so reliable and they show a very pleasing range of colourways too.  There is always the concern that they will be promiscuous and start interbreeding – that leaves gardens with pleasingly huge, but less pleasingly sludgy mixed colours where they have now merged.  The once deep red and purple with gorgeously spotted throats inter mingling with the huge creamy white with green spotted waxy flowers are a sight to behold.  In the autumn when the majority of the hellebores are feeding in the last of the autumnal sunshine, the bloom buds are forming and as if to protect their delicateness, the plant foliage goes mad and sends out huge green leaves, firm, spiked and a real protection for the flowers to come.  Taking off as many of these leaves as possible to give the flowers a chance to breathe is a fantastic lifter of spirits at even the lowest point of the gardening year.
