There is no doubt that this year has been the hottest and driest that our current batch of humanity can recall. Across the world but primarily Europe ad UK, there have been amazing temperatures,, well up into the mid 30’s which is unheard of. we just don’t have that sort of summer as a rule. Things started to kick off in late June when we were warned about a ‘heat dome’ which is drawing hot temperatures from north Africa and trapping it. The key drivers behind a heat dome for weather are high pressure systems creating stale atmospheric conditions Acting rater like a lid, they press warm air close to the surface and prevent it from escaping, thus allowing temperatures to continuously build. Humans have to keep their own bodies safe and then worry about pets, wild life and gardens lower down the pecking order.
Looking after gardens in these extremes is difficult. Recommendations from permanently hot countries would include watering deep at dawn. Focusing waster at the roots or base of a plant as early in the morning as can be managed. It must be able to soak in before any intense sun just evaporates the spray. Applying a thick spread of mulch earlier in the year will help retain as much moisture as possible later on in the summer when these occurences are becoming stronger. 5-7 cm of organic matter such as bark flakes, wood chips, compost etc will lock existing moisture in and will shield roots from extreme ground heat. Providing temporary shade will also be of great assistance, as it will be for the human growing kind too!
